In this tough economy, even families lead by both working parents find it difficult to support the growing needs of the children especially when they are going to school. Just imagine if you are a single mom, alone in raising a family? It is definitely a tough call and you need all the help you can get.

You are not the only single mom who struggles financially. There are a lot of other single mothers like you that need help too. Thus, the government has created programs and allocated a budget to keep these programs running in order to serve the needy.

The best thing to do to remedy your situation is to look for every grant available that you might be qualified for. This way, you maximize the benefits given by the government. There are thousands of government-funded grants. And the sad thing is that many qualified citizens do not apply for them. It is a waste.

The first step to maximizing the use of these grants is to know the different grants that you can apply for. Please refer to the list below:

Educational Grants

The Pell Grant is the most common and renowned grant for college education. Students must establish their need for government assistance in completing their education. They must not have any other bachelor’s degree and must be citizens of the US.

If you’re a single mom and you weren’t able to continue your college education because of early pregnancy or financial problem, you can always apply for a Pell Grant. To apply for this federal grant, you will need to submit the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). It is the core document required when applying for all financial aid and you will need to apply for it for each year that you are receiving financial aid.

Educational grants are important because they pave the way to getting a college degree which in turn will help you get great jobs.

Housing Grants

There is the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher which helps poor families obtain a decent, safe and clean home which is important in maintaining wellness.

Rental Housing for Lower Income Families is another grant that makes good quality rental housing accessible to families that belong to the poor. This may include households headed by a single mother.

Medical Grants

The Medical Assistance Program provides payments for Medicare premiums to safeguard the health of the whole family. It can also cover co-payments for medical insurance.

This is worth applying for as a medical insurance is a must especially if you have children.

Emergency Medical Services for Children is another program that is aimed toward helping children, minorities and the disabled. This program is government funded to improve facilities and emergency medical services.

Financial Grants

TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) is a federal program which helps out millions of US families. Formally known as welfare, it provides assistance in the form of cash. This is great as it helps families use this money to areas where they need it most. This form of assistance is only available for a maximum of 60 months, so you will need to be aware of this.

There are also grants that provide financial assistance to families with very low income that they cannot afford to pay for their energy bills. LIHEAP or Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program functions as such.

Small Business Grants

The SBA or Small Business Administration is your first source of grants when you are planning to start your own small business. While grants for funding your small business may be difficult to find, there are a lot of training and researches sponsored by the organization from which you can get a lot of benefits.

These are just the most common types of grants for single mothers that you must not miss. If you can qualify for these grants, do apply. Don’t waste the opportunity. Grants are free so you have nothing to lose but definitely have a lot to gain when you take advantage of them.
