Studies show that there are 12 million single parent families in the US and 85.2% of them are headed by single mothers. Most single mothers work hard to ensure a secure future for their kids. But with their limited income, they struggle to meet the daily demands of their families.

If you too are a single mom and going through tough circumstances, you can take advantage of assistance programs, educational grants, scholarships, medical help for kids, etc. Challenges in enduring the cost of raising a child can be dealt with better by these assistance programs. There are a lot of grant providers such as federal government, private organizations and charities that provide single moms financial help to avail health benefits, obtain a stable shelter, get college education, and cope with overdue bills and rising prices. Here is one of the forms of assistance a family can get:

Food Stamps

A food stamp provides financial assistance for purchasing food to¬†low- and no-income citizens of the US. It is now known as Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). It aims to put healthy food on the table for more than 46 million people each month. This federal nutrition program may help you stretch your food budget and buy healthy food. SNAP benefits can be used to buy food at grocery stores, convenience stores, and some farmers’ markets and co-op food programs.

Qualification Criteria for Food Stamps

There are different qualification criteria for SNAP. This program requires an applicant who belongs to low-income group. Needy single moms who wish to take advantage of this program can apply by submitting proof of their income.

How to Apply for Food Stamps / SNAP?

  1. To apply for SNAP food stamps, you must get a food stamp application form and then, complete it with required information. You can submit to the Department of Transitional Assistance (DTA) by mail, fax, personally or online. The DTA officials will assess you eligibility to avail the benefits of SNAP food stamps.
  2. There will be a phone interview conducted by a DTA caseworker. This is one way to assess your eligibility for the program. Your caseworker is the person that will assess you throughout the application process.
  3. You will be asked to submit verifications and you are only given 30 days to submit the following documents to your DTA case manager:
  • A document showing your name and address
  • Social security numbers for all household members applying
  • Proof of income for the previous four weeks
  • For non-citizens: proof of legal non-citizen status.

No More Paper Coupons

SNAP Food Stamp has its own Electronic Balance Transfer (EBT) Card whose functions are the same as bank debit cards. The customer just simply swipes the card in a point-of-sale device (POS) and enters a four digit Personal Identification Number (PIN). The amount of your purchases will be deducted from your EBT SNAP account.
