There was this shocking headline on Yahoo! last 22 June 2012 regarding a Texas woman who had a whopping $1.3 Million electricity bill. It was later reported that this woman rarely goes home due to the fact that she had to work to raise her kid as a single mom. Eventually, it was learned that the computation was wrong and her corrected bill was immediately sent showing $150 only.

But wait, only $150? An average family of four, no matter how hard he cuts his personal use of electricity, will still find it hard not only to pay the bill but also to cut it down to $150. Yet a single mom can simply keep that amount and eventually use it when the bill comes out.

How could that be possible? Well, the government of the United States actually cares for the single parents, especially moms. The Administration for Children and Families (ACF) under the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is responsible for overseeing the program since 1981 entitled Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).

Basically, LIHEAP assists low-income families pay for their utility bills, assist during energy crisis, and home repairs due to weatherization and energy-related damages. Mostly, single moms fall under this category since it is really hard to find a high-income job that allows you to raise a kid on your own as well. This year, they had already released $3.47 billion to assist states and territories to maintain a life with electricity.

To apply for the program, a single mom must show that her income does not really sustain the household expenses. She may be required to show her recent utility bills, payroll stub, documentation stuff showing her sources of income, proof of household, and any other documents that can really help them determine eligibility.

LIHEAP doesn’t guarantee that it would immediately provide assistance however. This program happened to be a “first come, first serve” basis that makes one wait longer than expected to know the decision for her. It may get frustrating, but it is definitely worth it.

Once you are proven and qualified, LIHEAP guarantees that you will feel warm during the winter and cool during summer. What a relief it would be!

Avoid the rush and learn for yourself if you can avail the assistance of LIHEAP to cover up some of your inevitable expenses so that you’ll not fear as to where your money may go.
